Throwing a good poker party does require the host to go out of his/her way a little to plan though just so all the guests are taken care of. Read the rest of this entry…

Cheap connectors

Cables and Connectors

With the advent of home video game consoles and the increasing graphical prowess of the newest consoles and latest games, many people have some very high tech equipment sitting in their living rooms. Of course there has been an entire industry built up around this and while we do not recommend cutting corners on your electronics, we do recommend you not fall for the expensive cables and connectors scheme that many companies are touting.

We know that the sales guy at your local electronics store has probably tried several times to sell you an expensive cable that you can get online for a fraction of the price. What they are actually selling is a brand name and expensive packaging. I guess if that is important to you then by all means pay 500% more for the same product but if you are reading this post you are probably trying to do a little research of your own. Cheaper Connector and cables do not mean you will notice any degradation in picture or sound quality. In fact, the sad truth is that you will only notice the difference when you look inside your wallet. Its true that there is a difference in durability which is why we don’t recommend you get the cheapest of bargain bin products on Ebay or Amazon but that doesn’t mean you can’t shop around online to find a decent quality cable that gives you a fair price.

We hope you will take this into consideration that the overwhelming body of evidence present on the internet suggest no difference in quality of picture and sound between cables of different prices. You can be savvy and save possibly hundreds of dollars on your home entertainment system off this one little truth alone!

PS3 arcade stick

Arcade joystick for the PS3

One of the fundamental changes that occurred in the 2000s in the American landscape was the removal of video game arcades. These places where early gamers congregated had been a popular hang out for the American teenager for nearly 30 years now but they have all but disappeared within the last decade. You can chalk this up to rising video game production costs and the mainstream breakthrough of next generation consoles. Whatever you may think is the reason, there are always going to be times when as gamers, we miss these places.

The home consoles are here to stay however and every bit as powerful as those arcade machines. You might still see one or two at the local Pizzeria or the movie theater but you’ve probably noticed (as I have) those games contain subpar gameplay and graphics compared to games like Crysis or Gears of War. Unfortunately arcades are gone forever but you can relive some of that lost glory with an Arcade joystick that works with current next-gen consoles. There are quite a few to choose from online and they will enable you to play fighting games that much better because you are able to navigate the game much more intuitively. The 2D fighting plane was intended to be played with a joystick and multiple buttons rather than a single controller that today’s consoles have.

If you’ve frequented fighting games at the arcades in the past and have some skill, you’ll soon come to realize that you never quite completely forget the moves and before you know it you’ll be fighting like you’ve always been again. The truth of the matter is however, you should buy arcade sticks for games like Marvel vs Capcom 3 or Mortal Kombat. You don’t really need to get 1 for first person shooters and racing games as you can’t really play those with an arcade stick anyway.

NES adapter for the Controller

Nintendo USB Controller Adapter

Playing games on contemporary consoles like the PS3 and Xbox 360, we often forget how good we have it. I guess there still is a bit of nostalgia when it comes to classic gaming too. Every time i pick up a NES or SNES controller i get a little bit of that back and thanks to the rise of emulators, I can play classic NES games anytime I want a real challenge as opposed to these mass market games out now.

If you checked out some of the games from before the playstation came around, you’ll realize that they were some of the most intensely difficult games on the market and that comes as no surprise as back then you didn’t have a lot to work with so you just had to make your games extremely hard to keep people playing for longer periods. With a Nintendo USB controller adapter, you can plug in an old NES controller to your computer, turn on the emulator and jump right back into that old school difficulty. Just make sure you wear some sort of protection as this controller has a nasty tendency to kill your fingers after some prolonged use.

Our game of choice happened to be one of the most difficult games of all time; BATTLETOADS! Yep if you were alive and gaming when this gem came out, you’ll remember countless hours trying to beat that damned bike level. Despite how hard it was, we still had a blast playing it with the NES USB Adapter and emulator on our gaming PC. The NES is a classic console that does not have to fade into the obscurity of your past. Its actually pretty difficult to find gear for it now so if you have a NES controller, hold on to it because maybe one day it will become a collectible item and you can get rich!

In case you haven’t been around for the 10 years, the Marvel vs. Capcom series has been one of the most successful arcade fighting games of all time. Bringing together heroes such as Spiderman and Ryu from Street Fighter may not seem like a crossover that could work at first but spend a small amount of time playing the game and you will notice that it is one of the best made fighting games of all time.

Now with Marvel vs. Capcom 3 about to be released, it is time to start dusting off those 99-hit combo strategies. Of course a game like this is best played with a Fight Stick for PS3 like the one below, but the controller would work pretty well too. I wonder if you can play this game with the driving wheel? Hmm definitely gonna give it a shot!

PS3 fight stick

PS3 fightstick

The fight stick would also come in handy when you play some of the classic arcade games that are available on the online market place. This definitely brings us back to the days when we used to spend time at the arcade playing fighting games laughing as the other guy put quarter after quarter into the machine or vice versa if we were the ones bleeding quarters. The marvel vs capcom 3 fight stick pictured above will ensure that you get the full arcade experience without the drain on your piggy bank. Granted the piggy bank method might be more fun if you’re winning.

I guess we’ll just have to settle for trolling online… oh well…

Video Game Furniture

Adjustable video game furniture

Whether you are having fun in the world of underground street racing in Need for Speed or you are driving the ultimate in driving simulations Gran Turismo 5, there is no doubt that having a driving chair would make the experience much more immersive and entertaining. When it comes to driving games, a controller just seems clunky and unrealistic.

Check out the Playseat Rookie Black adjustable driving seat (it actually seems more high quality than my ACTUAL car seat). I own quite a few pieces of Video Game Furniture now but one of the first things I got was a steering wheel and peddles to play all my racing games. I love playing racing games like this because It feels like I can almost smell the burning rubber as I tear up the tracks in my souped up Scion tC (OK I lose quite a bit in it).

You can also play flight simulators with this chair as you can easily put a joystick on it. For those of you who don’t play that many action sims, you can just use it as a comfortable gaming chair! Still, with a chair like this it would be quite a waste not to purchase a steering wheel set. It is just so much easier to game online driving with an actual wheel than the clunky joysticks that come on game pads. If you only get one video game furniture set. I would definitely put this at the top of the list.

BTW look for me Tofumaker on Xbox live if you want to race Forza 3. Actually, only look for me if you want to race and lose!

PS2 Swap Magic

Swap Magic Disc

Sometimes when you play games for the American market, you can miss out on some truly outstanding games from the Japanese market. This is especially the case if you are into Role Playing Games and survivor horror games because the Japanese market tends to have a much bigger appetite for them. I guess I can understand the need to have Zoning and region codes when it comes to digital software like video games but sometimes they can punish the wrong people. I am not trying to pirate games internationally, I simply want to play some games that I buy legitimately online from a foreign country because it was released there first.

With the Swap Magic Disc, I can do that exactly because it allows me to play imported games and basically overcomes the PS2′s built in restrictions on what games you can and cannot play. The way I see it, I bought the console so it should be considered mine and it should definitely be able to play whatever content I want it to play. The uses of Swap Magic do not end there because you can also play back ups of your existing games and pretty much any independent software you come across.

For anyone who wants to get the most out of their PS2, I would highly recommend that you get your own and try it out. You can buy swap magic from online as it usually isn’t found in stores like Game Stop. Some unscrupulous people use it to download and play pirated games illegally so it has gotten a bad name in that regard but if you use it ethically, the Swap Magic disk will help make the most out of your console.
